Easy like a Monday mooorniiing! Remix! Is there a man outchea that I can shed some light on today? Cool, found one… from South London in his early 20’s… hhmm, the mysterious Orae Khalil.
He describes his style as a “mixture of all the genres I admired as a child amongst my household like Reggae, Rare Grooves, Soul, Hip-Hop, Jazz and even Pop (Real Pop, like “Michael Jackson” Pop) and the genres I discovered up to this point such as indie.”
So, with such a variety of genres it’s fair to assume that you also have a wide range of inspirations right? Who or what inspires you?
I could go on this one forever lol but in a nutshell I’m inspired by everything I find a love for… not just music but games, conversations and football also. Artists that inspire me: Andre 3000, Akon, 2PAC, Marvin Gaye, Slick Rick, Nas, Kendrick, Drake, Bob Marley, MJ, 50 Cent, Aaliyah, plus more.
How did you come up with your artist name and is there a meaning behind it?
My artist name is my initials: O.R.A.E and “Khalil” is my Dads name.
That’s a nice touch and you are lucky enough that your initials create a whole new name lol dope! (Yes readers, I know his gov name and no I am not telling you! Lol)
Tell us about your previous projects…
- I released a very short EP last year on soundcloud… nothing major.
- Recorded a video from the EP called ‘WLF’ – you can find that on my VEVO / YouTube.
- Released my debut single “Baller” off my upcoming 16 track project ‘South Asylum’ (premiered on Complex but you can find that on GRM Daily and YouTube.
16 tracks… I’m guessing you put a lot of work into this one?
‘SOUTH ASYLUM’ I’m very, very proud of because I feel like “Baller” is only the start. I have 15 great tracks that I worked hard on creating. I’d say releasing ‘South Asylum’ – I feel like I can shape UK music in a more organic direction. Musical impact is what I’m focused on.
How have you been putting yourself out there besides social media and music platforms such as YouTube?
Reprezent UK, YKTS podcast… there’s been other blogs, etc but these are the most recent.
Do you have any hidden talents or skills we don’t know about?
I studied Drama at college and I have a short film coming out with ‘South Asylum’. I produce most of my own music. I started producing at like 13 so I have a bit of experience. I also engineer my own stuff which I’ve been doing for 4 years. I studied Graphics and Advertising at uni so I have a bit of skill in designing and branding also.
Love that! One man band! What about any random or interesting facts about you?
Half of my childhood was spent in America, Philadelphia.
Oh mad! I bet that was definitely an eye opener in terms of culture and also a great character building experience.
Surely that must have given you a few positive affirmations that you live by? Share one with us…
Erm, music isn’t a hobby or a job to me. It’s really a lifestyle! I spend 7 hours or more creating music daily. I’ve done this since I was 15 so it’s almost a decade of learning for me and I’m always hungry to learn more. It’s really all I have in my life that gives me a peace of mind.
Dedicated, gotta respect that! Oh and Orae…? I think you just baited up your age my G!
